Jakarta – Does breastfeeding really make babies smarter or is it just a myth? In fact, Moms, several studies have shown that breastfed babies are smarter than non-breastfed babies. So it’s not just a myth, the effect of breastfeeding on brain intelligence is scientifically proven. So, keep the spirit of breastfeeding, Mother. For a more complete explanation, see the description below, yes. Can breastfeeding really increase IQ? Researchers have shown that babies who are breastfed for at least a year will grow up to be much smarter than babies who are not breastfed. One study showed that breastfeeding helps the brain develop better. However, this study was carried out in an unusual way by examining newborns up to the age of 30 to see how it manifests in life. “Our study provides the first evidence that prolonged breastfeeding not only increases intelligence up to at least 30 years of age, but also impacts both individual and societal levels by increasing educational attainment and productive ability,” said Dr Bernardo Lessa Horta, from the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, quoted from Today. The study followed nearly 6,000 babies born in Pelotas, Brazil, in 1982. Then, when 3,500 of them were around the age of 30, they were given an intelligence test and asked about their income. “Participants who were breastfed for 12 months or more had higher IQ scores (3.76 points difference), more years of education and higher monthly income than those who were breastfed for less than 1 month,” writes Dr Bernardo. Breastfeeding is not likely to magically turn a child intelligent, different studies have shown time and time again that children who breastfeed tend to have IQ levels at least slightly higher than those who are not breastfed. Breast milk contains a number of nutrients that help the development of the little one’s brain. These nutrients include protein, enzymes, taurine, and amino acids. Besides being able to increase your baby’s IQ, breastfeeding also helps create a strong bond of love between mother and baby, which is not only beneficial for mental development, but also fosters self-confidence and self-esteem.
